Private Lessons

I have ten years of experience teaching private harp lessons to harpists of all ages in the Roanoke Valley. My teaching method is based on the style of Carlos Salzedo, who promoted a healthy technique and a strong, rich sound.

My approach to teaching is based on cultivating a strong technique, music theory knowledge, rhythmic proficiency, and performance confidence in each student through a series of graded repertoire. I understand that each student is unique, so my lesson plans are personalized to each student's needs and interests.

My teaching rate is $60/hour. I accept students of all ages and proficiency levels as long as they are willing to take direction, work hard, and have fun!

My private harp studio is located in Roanoke, Virginia. Please email me at rachelhallharp@gmail.com for more information or to set up a trial lesson!

Dalcroze Eurhythmics

roanoke virginia harp instructor

Eurhythmics is the study of music, specifically rhythm, through movement. As a strong believer in the close relationship between the mind and the body, 20th-century pedagogue Jacques Dalcroze conducted a series of experiments with his students and came to the conclusion that physical movement is a vital aid in the study of music and rhythm. If one is able to musically connect the mind with the body through physical movement, then musical ideas are more complete, and thus better communicated.

On the eurhythmics floor, this is accomplished through various exercises. Rhythmic properties, tempo, and meters are all broken down into groups and learned as recognizable idioms. These idioms are then expressed through movement, such as arm swings, clapping, or stepping. Many of these rhythmic idioms have designated movements to help with their identification. Students perform various exercises in order to understand this vocabulary more clearly, such as rhythmic canons, microbeats, dictations, and cross rhythms. The goal is for students to familiarize themselves with this vocabulary enough to recognize, identify, and perform them naturally.

Eurhythmics is also distinguished by its learning atmosphere. A eurhythmics room is not like the traditional classroom. There are no desks, no lectures, and no meticulous note-taking. Students are not lectured about how rhythm works; instead, they experience rhythm kinesthetically when their bare feet hit the floor. Anyone from preschool to adult can experience music through Eurhythmics!

As a qualified Dalcroze Eurhythmics instructor, Rachel Lee Hall not only incorporates Eurhythmics into her private and group lessons, but also offers residencies and demonstrations to students of all ages and backgrounds.
